It’s hard to find a more charming neighbourhood in Rome than Trastevere. Staying here means you can experience the city at its most authentic and this guide to the best Rome hotels in Trastevere will help you find the perfect base to do that.
Lively and vibrant, Trastevere is often nicknamed Er Core de Roma (literally, the heart of Rome) because it offers the most genuine representation of Roman life. Truth be told, this area is also very touristy, with crowds day and night, but this acts as a testament to its irresistible allure.
Its labyrinth of cobbled streets reveals a kaleidoscope of postcard-perfect scenes, from buildings covered in ivy and bougainvillaea with clothes hanging out to dry to pocket-sized piazzas swirled with trattorias and locals chatting in the local dialect.
The sense of community is particularly strong in Trastevere, as seen during the annual Festa de’ Noantri, a much-loved festival that celebrates the neighbourhood and its patron saint. If you’re curious, make sure to plan your stay around the first Sunday of July to see it.

Where exactly in Rome is Trastevere?
Trastevere gets its name from its location, from the Latin Trans Tiberim, literally “beyond the Tiber”. It’s located south of the Vatican, on the west bank of the river, and can be easily reached by crossing the Ponte Sisto bridge near Campo de’ Fiori.
There’s no metro in Trastevere and one of the closest stations is 25 minutes away at Circo Massimo. However, there are many buses and trams that connect the neighbourhood to other areas in Rome (like no. 8, 23, and 280). Plus, you can get to Fiumicino airport from Trastevere in about half an hour with the Trenitalia regional train departing from the Roma Trastevere station.

The Basilica di Santa Cecilia is another beautiful church to visit, while the Cloisters of San Cosimato are a treasure still unknown by many.
Art lovers should check out Raphael’s frescoes at Villa Farnesina and the artworks exhibited at Palazzo Corsini, which include paintings by Caravaggio, Van Dyck and Guido Reni. Nearby, the Botanical Garden of Trastevere is a beautiful green space to explore.
For scenes of Roman daily life, check out the morning market in Piazza San Cosimato and explore some of the most picturesque streets like Vicolo del Cedro or Vicolo del Piede. If you’re after an amazing view over Rome, head to the belvedere at the top of Gianicolo Hill just a 15-minute walk from Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere. Along the way, you can stop to see the Tempietto di San Pietro in Montorio built by Bramante.
