Wondering if hotels in Rome near the Spanish Steps are only for those with big budgets? Think again! The glittering area around the world’s most famous stairway may not be your first port of call when searching for a hotel in Rome, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that this upscale Roman neighbourhood has an excellent selection of hotels and apartments that will satisfy any budget.

Grand and iconic, visiting the Spanish Steps is a must on your list of top things to see in Rome. Called Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti in Italian, the Spanish Steps were built by a French diplomat in the 18th century to link the Church of Trinità dei Monti with Piazza di Spagna below. They take their name from the Spanish embassy to the Holy See, located in the square at the bottom of the stairway.

Over the last three centuries, this Baroque masterpiece of urban design has been the place to see and be seen in Rome, immortalised in movies and fashion shows, and synonymous with luxury and style. The area is dotted with high-end shops, excellent restaurants and many historical landmarks, which makes staying in a hotel near the Spanish Steps a real Dolce Vita experience.

Here’s what we’ll cover. Click on any title to jump to each section:

Where exactly in Rome are the Spanish Steps?

Map of the Neighbourhoods in Rome

Location-wise, the Spanish Steps are situated in the rione (Italian for ‘neighbourhood’) Campo Marzio which is very central and definitely one of the best places to stay in Rome for sightseeing. You’ll find it in the city’s Trident, an area of the historical centre that’s based around Piazza del Popolo from which three big streets branch off (Via di Ripetta, Via de Babuino and Via del Corso) like a spear with three prongs – hence the name.

There’s no denying that this part of Rome is busy and crowded. However, you can still find some great hotels that manage to keep a quiet, homey atmosphere despite being so central.

From Piazza di Spagna you can easily explore the city on foot with most of the key attractions only a 10-15 minutes stroll away. There’s also a metro stop (“Spagna” on line A) right next to the Spanish Steps with direct connections to the Termini Train Station plus some convenient bus stops, such as line 119 which goes to Piazza Venezia.

Trendy, historic and full of culture the area around the Spanish Steps is one of the top places to see in Rome. And with so much to do, whether it’s museums, parks, or unique tea rooms, there’s enough to keep you busy for an entire day.

At the bottom of the stairway, you can admire the curious fountain by the Bernini father-son duo or dive into English Romantic poetry at John Keats’ last home (now the Keats-Shelley House museum) followed by tea at the legendary Babington’s tearoom. It’s also worth checking out the French Church of Trinità dei Monti and the magnificent Florentine facade of Villa Medici, both at the top of the 135 travertine steps.

Nearby the Spanish Steps you’ll find the vine-covered beauty Via Margutta, then it’s on to Piazza del Popolo with its iconic twin churches above which is the splendid park of Villa Borghese. If you’re in the mood for some good old retail therapy, make sure to visit Via Condotti, Via Frattina, and Via Borgognona, these are Rome’s most luxurious streets full of designer boutiques and upscale stores.
