Choosing to stay in one of the many hotels near Termini station in Rome comes with many benefits. First, you don’t have to elbow your way onto crowded metros and buses with suitcases. Also, the area boasts excellent connections to most of Rome’s key attractions (and the airport), which makes visiting the city a breeze. And if you’ve got some extra time, you can easily take a train out of the city for a fun day trip.

Being the city’s central transport hub, the neighbourhood around Termini station is bustling with travellers at any time of the day. While it may not have the charm of other parts of Rome, it has its own corners of Roman magic, like the artisanal food stands of the Central Market and the beautiful Church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Here’s what we’ll cover. Click on any title to jump to each section:

Where exactly in Rome is Termini train station?

Map of the Neighbourhoods in RomeTermini station is located in Piazza dei Cinquecento, about a 20-minute walk from the Colosseum. It’s part of the rione Esquilino, the district named after the eponymous hill, the highest among those on which Rome was built.

Technically speaking, this is still the center of Rome, within the Aurelian walls, even if it feels miles away from the glitz and glamour of Via del Corso. Some of the city’s most iconic sights are within walking distance, including the Trevi Fountain and the Roman Forum (both 20 minutes away).

Termini station plays a big part in daily life for the locals, which makes it a prime spot for people-watching. It’s also a polar star when it comes to navigating Rome, as you can get to it from anywhere in the city and by any mode of transportation.

Hotels near Termini Station in Rome - Piazza della Repubblica

Piazza della Repubblica

The Termini neighbourhood may lack the allure of the Spanish Steps or Trevi fountain, but it has its fair share of ancient treasures to explore. Right opposite the station is the Baths of Diocletian, one of the top sights in Rome. Dating from the 3rd century BC, they were the biggest thermal public baths in the empire. Located in Piazza della Repubblica is Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and of the Martyrs, a titular church which is built inside the ruined frigidarium of the Roman Baths of Diocletian that was built in the 16th century and based on the original design by Michelangelo Buonarroti.

As for religious buildings, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore is a must-see in the Termini area. It is one of Rome’s four papal basilicas and holds the remains of famed architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Also worth visiting is the baroque Church of Santa Maria Della Vittoria to see Bernini’s stunning St. Theresa in Ecstasy.

Where to stay in Rome near the Termini train station

Hotels near Termini Station in Rome - Entrance to Termini StationThe Termini neighbourhood is the area with the highest concentration of hotels and guest houses in Rome. Accommodation options cover all budgets, but generally speaking, some of the cheapest hotels in Rome can be found here.

The area is best known for its basic lodging for quickie holidays and soulless hotels catering to business stays. But you’ll also find grand establishments for indulgent gateways and charming B&Bs full of character.

Check out some of my favourite hotels near the Pantheon so you can stay right in the heart of it all. Or get a taste of the city’s glamour with a stay at these hotels near the Spanish Steps.
