Why Italian Verbs Feel So Hard (But Aren’t)
Verbs are the backbone of any language. And yes, they scare learners. But here’s the truth most people never tell you:
- Italian and English share thousands of verbs
- They follow predictable patterns
- Once you know those patterns, you stop “learning verbs” and start recognising them
This is the key to understanding how to learn Italian verbs efficiently.
First, what is a Verb in Italian?
Before the shortcuts, let’s make sure we’re on the same page. A verb is simply a word you can put “to” in front of.
- To eat
- To travel
- To cook
- To decide
Simple.

Now here’s the important part. In Italian, the “to” is already built in. It’s the last three letters of the verb. There are only three endings:
- -are
- -ere
- -ire
That’s it. If you can spot those endings, you can spot verbs everywhere. And just like that, you’ve unlocked your first shortcut.

How to Learn Italian Verbs – 5 Must-Know Shortcuts

Examples:
- to educate → educare
- to indicate → indicare
- to complicate → complicare
- to implicate → implicare
You already knew these. You just didn’t realise it.

Shortcut #2: English -IZE / -ISE → Italian -IZZARE

- -ize / -ise

Become -izzare in Italian.
Examples:
- to organize → organizzare

This is one of the biggest verb multipliers.
English verbs ending in -ate very often become -are in Italian.
Examples:
- to create → creare

- to separate → separare
- to calculate → calcolare
- to celebrate → celebrare
Pause for a moment. You didn’t learn these verbs. You recognised them. That difference matters more than you think.

Shortcut #5: English -FY → Italian -FICARE
English verbs ending in -fy often become -ficare in Italian.
Examples:
- to simplify → semplificare
- to clarify → chiarificare
- to identify → identificare

This rule alone unlocks dozens of high-level Italian verbs.

Want a bonus shortcut? Oh, go on then!
