Most learners dread learning Italian words because they try to memorise endless word lists. But what if you didn’t have to? Did you know there are 5 shortcuts that let you learn thousands of Italian words almost instantly, without memorising lists, using flashcards, or losing your mind?
In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how to learn Italian words fast using simple patterns that feel like cheating. The best part is that this works for both absolute beginners and more experienced learners.
How to Learn Italian Words Fast
Shortcut #1 – English words ending in -y become in -ia in Italian
Any time you see an English word ending in -y, especially academic “-ology” type words, swap that -y for -ia and you’ve almost certainly got the Italian word.
-
- biology → la biologia
- philosophy → la filosofia
- sociology → la sociologia
- anatomy → l’anatomia
- geography → la geografia
- psychology → la psicologia
- democracy → la democrazia
Quick grammar tip: notice all the articles are la or l’ because words ending in -a are almost always feminine in Italian.

Shortcut #3 – English words ending in -ty become in -tà in Italian
Now let’s look at one of the most useful patterns for everyday vocabulary. Words in English ending in -ty become -tà in Italian.
- city → la città
- identity → l’identità
- society → la società
- university → l’università
- liberty → la libertà
- possibility → la possibilità
- quality → la qualità
Quick grammar tip: all -tà words are feminine and never change in the plural. For example: una città becomes due città, un’università becomes tre università.

Shortcut #4 – English words ending in -ce become in -za in Italian
This next rule is even easier because the word barely changes. Abstract nouns such as feelings, qualities, and concepts often end in -ce in English, and in Italian that -ce becomes -za.
- importance → l’importanza
- elegance → l’eleganza
- violence → la violenza
- patience → la pazienza
- distance → la distanza
- experience → l’esperienza
- difference → la differenza
Quick grammar tip: these words all end in -a, so they’re feminine. To make them plural, swap -a for -e, for example: le importanze, le distanze.

Shortcut #5 – English words ending in -tion become in -zione in Italian
This is the most powerful shortcut because it unlocks thousands of words instantly. English words ending in -tion become -zione in Italian.
- nation → la nazione
- attention → l’attenzione
- education → l’educazione
- situation → la situazione
- information → l’informazione
- conversation → la conversazione
- station → la stazione
- emotion → l’emozione
- communication → la comunicazione
Quick grammar tip: every -zione word is feminine. To form the plural, change -e to -i, for example: le nazioni, le stazioni.
Attenzione! Sometimes these words change meaning. These are called false friends. For example, educazione in Italian doesn’t mean “education” in the school sense, it means good manners or politeness. If you want to talk about schooling, you would use istruzione or formazione. So if an Italian says you have molta educazione, they’re saying you’re well-mannered, not highly educated.

Common Mistakes When Learning Italian Words
These shortcuts work most of the time, but Italian is a living language, not a maths formula. Occasionally, words break the pattern, so treat these rules as your first guess, not your final answer.
- boy does not become boia (which means executioner). The correct word is ragazzo.
- happy does not become happia. The correct word is felice.
- country does not become countria. The correct word is paese.
These shortcuts will give you the correct word around 80–90% of the time, which is more than enough to dramatically speed up your learning.
