First, let me share the one trick to watching Italian movies which make these particular movies beat months of study. You see, most Italian learners watch movies that are either too easy they don’t learn anything or are too difficult that nothing sticks so they give up!
The trick is to watch Italian movies that are slightly above your level, but not so much that your brain switches off. Linguists call this comprehensible input, and it’s the fastest way to learn Italian. I call it the Goldilocks Zone. Not too easy. Not too hard. But juuuust right.
That’s exactly what these five movies give you. A perfect blend of real-world Italian, natural speed, and everyday vocabulary that would normally take six months to pick up from a textbook.
1. Best Italian Show on Netflix for A2 Learners: Riv4li (Riv4lries)
Level: A2
This first show is perfect for A2 level learners because the characters speak in short, direct sentences, so context fills in any word you miss.
Riv4li is an Italian teen drama set in the beautiful city of Pisa. It follows middle schoolers navigating rivalries, friendships, and first crushes across 14 episodes. The story centres on two opposing groups at school. On one side, you have the Insiders, the popular crowd led by the most popular boy in school. On the other, the Outsiders, the underdogs led by the new girl in town. The two groups clash, but little by little, they start to realise that joining forces is actually better than fighting each other.
The characters speak the way real teenagers actually talk, with short sentences, simple structures, and direct questions. That means you’re not trying to figure out a complicated sentence while also decoding vocabulary, which is why this works well at an A2 level. And because the situations are so familiar, context does a lot of the work for you even when you miss a word or two.

L’amore è cieco Italia is the Italian version of the popular Netflix reality show, Love Is Blind. If you don’t know the concept, here’s how it works: a group of singles search for their soulmate without ever seeing each other face-to-face. They date in separate pods, and the catch is they can only meet in person once they’re engaged. Then the newly engaged couples go on a romantic trip before their wedding a month later.
Reality shows like this one are a fantastic learning tool because the language is completely natural and unscripted. And this one is perfect for B1 level: it’s accessible enough to stay engaged, but also rich in vocabulary and natural speech patterns, so you’ll walk away with something new every episode.
For instance, you’ll pick up some beautiful endearing terms like piccolina (little one, sweetie) or peperino (literally, little spicy one, used affectionately for someone lively and a little cheeky). You’ll also hear emotionally rich expressions like fare una famiglia (to start a family), con gli occhi a cuore (completely smitten, literally “with heart eyes”), and battibeccare (to bicker playfully).

Terrazza Sentimento is a three-episode true crime docuseries, and for your Italian, it is worth every single minute. It tells the story of Alberto Genovese, a tech entrepreneur who built his fortune founding facile.it, a famous insurance and financial comparison website.
On paper, he’s a successful businessman, but behind closed doors, he was hosting wild, drug-fuelled parties at his luxury penthouse in Milan, which was nicknamed Terrazza Sentimento, literally “Feeling Terrace”. He was eventually arrested for drugging and assaulting young women, and what the investigation uncovered was a world of money, power, and abuse.
Because it’s a documentary, the narration is clear, well-paced, and delivered in standard educated Italian, the kind you actually need to follow the news or understand what’s happening around you in Italy.
On top of that, you also get interviews with journalists, lawyers, police officials, and witnesses, each speaking in a different register, so your ear gets trained across multiple styles of Italian all at once. 4. Best Italian Show on Netflix for C1 Learners: Storia della mia famiglia (My Family)
Level: C1
This next show is for more advanced learners at a C1 level, with fast-paced dialogue and slang that no textbook will ever prepare you for.
Storia della mia famiglia is a beautiful Italian drama series about a man named Fausto. He has two young children, he’s terminally ill, and his ex-wife is completely unreliable. So he does the only thing he can think of: he leaves his children in the care of the four most important people in his life: his mother, his brother, and his two best friends. The result is a completely unprepared group of people who suddenly find themselves becoming some kind of family for the sake of the two kids.
The second season has just been released and picks up one year after Fausto‘s death. The chaotic little family is now fragile and fractured, the kids are separated, and just when you think things couldn’t get more complicated, Fausto‘s father, who knew absolutely nothing about his son’s death, comes back into the picture.
The dialogue is conversational Italian with genuine southern expressions like:
- Che c’azzecca? — What does that have to do with anything? Used to challenge something completely off-topic.
- Che ne saccio. — How should I know? Southern dialectal form of the standard che ne so.
If you’re at C1 level, this combination makes for an excellent exercise: not just vocabulary and speed, but real linguistic variation you’ll encounter in Italy.
You’ll also pick up on certain sentence structures that don’t follow the standard rules you’ve learned. For example, in standard Italian, “I saw Sarah” is simply Ho visto Sarah. But in the southern construction you’ll hear in this show, the same sentence becomes L’ho vista a Sarah, where Sarah is referenced twice, first as the direct object pronoun la, contracted to l’ before ho, and then again as the full noun phrase a Sarah.
5. Best Italian Show on Netflix for C2 Learners: Due spicci (Two Cents)
Level: C2
This next show is a perfect C2-level challenge where you’ll hear how grammar changes in Southern Italian, breaking every rule in your textbook.
Due spicci is the brand-new animated series by the famous Italian cartoonist Zerocalcare. In these new episodes, the protagonist Zero is navigating all the messy, complicated problems of adult life, including financial struggles running a venue with his friend, and an old crush who re-enters his life. And then there’s mamma (mum), the safe harbour to escape to when everything falls apart, and where the cotolette (breaded cutlets) are always waiting!
From a language learning perspective, this show is strictly C1 and above. Zerocalcare‘s style is fast, full of slang, and the characters mostly speak Romanesco, the dialect spoken in Rome and the surrounding region, which makes comprehension more challenging.
Here’s a taste of the Romanesco you’ll hear throughout the series:
- Er — Used instead of il (the, masculine article). So instead of il ragazzo (“the boy”), you get er ragazzo.
- Semo — Used instead of siamo (we are).
- Mortacci tua — A very common Roman swear word that literally means “your ugly dead ones.” It can be used either playfully or with real venom, similar to “for the love of…” or “oh come on!” in English. It can be quite vulgar depending on context.
BONUS TIP: How to Access the Full Italian Netflix Catalogue
Here’s a bonus tip! Depending on where you are in the world, some of these shows I’ve mentioned may not be available in your Netflix library. And even if they are, you’re probably still not seeing the full Italian Netflix catalogue.
To fix this, you can use a VPN, which is basically just an app that lets you choose which country you’re browsing from. It’s super easy: just connect through an Italian server and Netflix will think you’re browsing from Italy, thus unlocking the full Italian library.
A VPN is a helpful program that not only protects your actual location but it allows you to ‘pretend’ you are based in another country online. But, what does this mean and how can a VPN help you learn languages with Netflix?
When you go online using any device, it has an indicator attached to it – an IP address. Among other things, this indicator ‘tells the Internet’ and the sites that you connect to what country you are from. This way, Netflix also ‘knows’ where you are from.
The thing is, different content is available on Netflix in different countries, and this availability changes over time with new shows being added or removed.
After you install a VPN (I personally use NordVPN), you can use it to hide your IP address and use one from another country instead. This way, if you find out that a show you’re looking for isn’t available in Australia or the US – you can pretend to be in Italy!
