First, let me share the one trick to watching Italian movies which make these particular movies beat months of study. You see, most Italian learners watch movies that are either too easy they don’t learn anything or are too difficult that nothing sticks so they give up!
The trick is to watch Italian movies that are slightly above your level, but not so much that your brain switches off. Linguists call this comprehensible input and it’s the fastest way to learn Italian. I call it the Goldilocks Zone. Not too easy. Not too hard. But juuuust right.
That’s exactly what these five movies give you. A perfect blend of real-world Italian, natural speed, and everyday vocabulary that would normally take six months to pick up from a textbook.
1. Best Italian Movie on Netflix for Beginners: Non abbiamo bisogno di parole
This first movie is perfect for beginners because the spoken Italian is natural and easy to follow, putting you straight into the Goldilocks Zone: it’s not too easy, not too hard, but juuuust right.
Non abbiamo bisogno di parole is a brilliant dramedy that tells the story of Eletta, a teenage girl growing up on a farm in Piedmont. Her brother and both of her parents are deaf, which makes her the family’s ears and voice with the rest of the world. She translates doctor’s appointments, handles bureaucracy, and even finds herself at the centre of her father’s campaign when he runs for mayor of their small town.
But something unexpected happens. During a music class at school, Eletta discovers a passion for singing, and she’s faced with a choice: audition for a prestigious music school in Turin, or stay to help her family. Oh, and there’s also a handsome boy in the picture, of course.
This movie is a great starting point because a portion of the dialogue is in Italian Sign Language rather than spoken Italian. This means the pace is naturally much slower than the average Italian movie, and for you as a beginner, that makes all the difference.
And when the characters do speak, you’re hearing real, everyday Italian. The kind used at home, between friends, in a small Italian town. Natural and completely manageable.
You’ll also come across some wonderful colloquial expressions like:

This next movie teaches you more useful, everyday Italian in two hours than you’d pick up in six months with your head buried in a textbook.
Per te is inspired by the true story of Paolo, a man in his early forties who is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. At its heart is the relationship between Paolo, his eleven-year-old son Mattia, and his wife Michela as they face the disease together. Not through grand gestures, but with small acts of love.
Paolo is aware of what lies ahead, so, while he still can, he tries to teach his son everything: how to shave, how to drive, how to wear a tie, how to make a family recipe. And in doing so, he turns the most ordinary moments into a memory they’ll carry forever, even when he no longer can.
Have tissues ready, but also a notebook nearby, because the Italian in this film is full of the kind of everyday situations that are genuinely useful for learners, like booking a hotel room, ordering gelato, or just navigating family conversations.
The dialogue features a touch of Romanesco, the language of Rome, and a hint of Sicilian to reflect the characters’ backgrounds. It’s very light, nothing that will slow you down, but a really good reminder that real Italian isn’t just one sound.
3. Best Italian Comedy Movie on Netflix: Buen Camino
This next movie sits right in the Goldilocks Zone because so much of the humour is visual that the story carries you even when you miss a word.
Buen Camino follows Checco, the son of a wealthy sofa manufacturer who has never worked a day in his life. He’s also been a pretty absent father, until the day his daughter Cristal suddenly disappears.
When he finds out she’s gone to walk the Camino di Santiago, he follows her. First by Ferrari, then, very reluctantly, on foot. And watching this man, who has never carried a bag in his life, suddenly sleeping in hostels and making his way through remote villages is absolutely hilarious. But underneath the comedy, there’s a truly touching story of a father rediscovering the daughter he never really knew.
Expect natural, colloquial Italian with a warm Apulian touch, because the lead actor, Checco Zalone, is actually from Apulia. But don’t worry, it’s completely easy to follow and, if anything, it just makes the character even more loveable.

4. Best Italian Documentary on Netflix for Real Italian: Unica
This next film teaches you more real-world Italian in two hours than any textbook ever could, because the dialogue is completely unscripted.
Unica is a Netflix documentary about Ilary Blasi, one of Italy’s most recognisable television personalities and the ex-wife of Francesco Totti, the legendary Roma footballer who is, to many Romans, practically a deity. For years, they were Italy’s golden couple, the kind of pair nobody ever imagined would split up. And then they did. Very publicly.
He accused her of stealing his Rolex collection, and hid all of her designer shoes and handbags. In other words, an absolute soap opera. And in this documentary, Ilary sits down and tells the whole story, or at least, her side of it.
Because there’s no scripted dialogue, what you’re getting is pure, unfiltered, real Italian. And that’s incredibly valuable, because you’ll hear natural phrasing, spontaneous reactions, and those little filler words that hold Italian conversation together, like:
- Tipo. — Like, kind of.
- Insomma. — Well, I mean, basically.
- Cioè. — I mean, that is to say.
And since Ilary is from Rome, you’ll also get a taste of that warm, distinctive Roman accent. Nothing too heavy, actually a joy to listen to.
5. Best Italian Movie on Netflix for Fashion Vocabulary: Diamanti
This next movie is a perfect Goldilocks pick that teaches you two completely different Italian vocabularies at once: everyday conversation between women, and the rich language of Italy’s fashion world.
Diamanti is set in 1970s Rome, inside the Canova atelier, a prestigious workshop specialising in costumes for theatre and film. At the helm are two sisters who couldn’t be more different. One steely and pragmatic, the other still broken by a terrible loss. Surrounding them is a wonderful ensemble of seamstresses, cutters, and embroiderers, each carrying her own private world of difficult husbands, financial struggles, and complicated children.
The dialogue is clear, mostly standard, and spoken at a pace you can easily follow. But what I really love is the balance of language you get.
On one hand, you hear natural, everyday conversations between women talking about life, family, and daily struggles, with expressions like:
- Cornuta. — A woman being cheated on. Literally “horned one,” the Italian equivalent of being cuckolded.
- Mi ha mollato. — He dumped me.
- Fai come ti pare. — Do whatever you want.
- La devi smettere. — You must stop it.
On the other hand, you’re introduced to the rich, specialised vocabulary of the atelier. Terms you might not normally prioritise, but hey, this is Italy, the fashion capital of the world! For example:
- Cucire. — To sew.
- Rammendare. — To mend, to darn.
- La costumista. — The costume designer.
- I bozzetti. — The costume sketches.
- La sottogonna. — The underskirt.
BONUS TIP: How to Access the Full Italian Netflix Catalogue
Here’s a bonus tip! Depending on where you are in the world, some of these shows I’ve mentioned may not be available in your Netflix library. And even if they are, you’re probably still not seeing the full Italian Netflix catalogue.
To fix this, you can use a VPN, which is basically just an app that lets you choose which country you’re browsing from. It’s super easy: just connect through an Italian server and Netflix will think you’re browsing from Italy, thus unlocking the full Italian library.
A VPN is a helpful program that not only protects your actual location but it allows you to ‘pretend’ you are based in another country online. But, what does this mean and how can a VPN help you learn languages with Netflix?
When you go online using any device, it has an indicator attached to it – an IP address. Among other things, this indicator ‘tells the Internet’ and the sites that you connect to what country you are from. This way, Netflix also ‘knows’ where you are from.
The thing is, different content is available on Netflix in different countries, and this availability changes over time with new shows being added or removed.
After you install a VPN (I personally use NordVPN), you can use it to hide your IP address and use one from another country instead. This way, if you find out that a show you’re looking for isn’t available in Australia or the US – you can pretend to be in Italy!
