It’s like saying “stop it” while actually meaning, “please don’t ever stop!” For example, when your partner gives you one of those compliments we looked at earlier, like Sei Bellissimo/a (You’re beautiful) or Stai benissimo (You look great), and you want to act a little shy but secretly love the attention, you can say:
- Partner: Adoro quando sorridi. — I love it when you smile.
- You: Smettila, mi fai arrossire! — Stop it, you’re making me blush!
You can also make it a bit more emphatic by adding a simple ma (but) at the start: Ma smettila! This turns it into a more dramatic “Oh, stop it!”, perfect for when your partner says something super sweet or flattering and you want to pretend to protest while really soaking it all in:

- showing a little frustration, like Dai, basta! (Please, stop!)
- or if you really want to be dramatic, you can drag it out like Daiii! (Come ooon, please!).
