In this Veron neighbourhood guide, we’ll explore the best six areas and suggest some of the best hotels in Verona. Whether you’re in town by yourself, with the family, or on business, I’ve got you covered.

Mostly known for Romeo and Juliet’s tormented love story, Verona is a beautiful town in Northern Italy with a thriving urban scene and layers of history to explore. One moment you can find yourself strolling through a magnificent Renaissance garden and the next you’re teleported to ancient Rome right where gladiators had their bloody fights.

With so many things to see and do in Verona, finding the right accommodation is key to making the most of your time in the city. All the neighbourhoods covered in this guide offer great options that will help you find the best place to stay during your trip.

HISTORIC CENTRE

The historic center is your best bet if you plan to stay in Verona for a weekend. This is where all the city’s main landmarks and sightseeing hotspots are concentrated and is thus the best neighbourhood to stay in if you are visiting the city for the first time.

Founded in the 1st century B.C., the historic centre of Verona is a gorgeous ensemble of architectural delights spanning different eras. Plus, everywhere you look, you’ll find beautiful buildings steeped in history that catch the eye with their little balconies full of flowers and facades covered in green foliage. And it’s precisely among these buildings that the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet unfolded, as you’ll learn with a visit to Juliet’s house and the famous balcony.

At the heart of this neighbourhood is Piazza delle Erbe, the oldest square in Verona. It stands right on the site where the Romans built their forum when they arrived in the city and continues to be the epicentre of local life. The Madonna Verona, the city’s symbol, sits atop a fountain, watching over locals and visitors lounging in bars and browsing the stalls of the bustling daily market.

The best view of the piazza is from the top of the Lamberti Tower, where you can see the whole historic centre. However, the star of the show in this neighbourhood is the magnificent Roman amphitheatre, which predates the Colosseum by almost half a century. Known as Arena, it hosts a world-famous summer opera festival.

Compared to other parts of the city, hotels in Verona’s historic center are a bit more expensive, but you’ll save time and money by not having to take taxis and public transport.

Where to stay in Verona historic centre

• Luxury: Due Torri Hotel – An elegant 5-star hotel in a 14th-century palace just steps from Juliet’s balcony. Each room is individually decorated with vibrant colours, period furnishings, and precious textiles. The hotel has a panoramic rooftop terrace, a wellness centre, and a gourmet restaurant.
• Mid-range: Residenza Borsari – A family-run, 4-star hotel in a historic building near the Arena, offering a quiet escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. There are only four rooms, all with stylish interiors and pretty balconies. Breakfast is included in the room rate and in the summer, it’s served on a lovely terrace.
• Budget: All’Opera Prima – With an enviable location right by the Arena, this charming B&B offers comfortable rooms full of character, in different sizes and layouts, inside a fully refurbished ancient building. Guests staying a minimum of 3 nights get a complimentary dinner.
• Familiy-friendly: Hotel Colomba d’Oro – Only steps from the Arena, this elegant 4-star hotel has Superiors rooms that can accommodate up to three people and are a great option for a comfortable family stay in Verona. You’ll find a great selection of restaurants within walking distance, plus an excellent buffet breakfast.
• Apartment: San Nicolò 3 – San Nicolò 3 offers a number of elegant apartments in a quiet building dating from the 18th century only metres from the Arena. Available in different sizes that can sleep 4-7 people, they all come with fully equipped kitchen, air conditioning, washing machine and chromotherapy shower.

VERONETTA

A great selection of affordable accommodations makes Veronetta the best base to visit Verona on a budget. Located east of the historic centre, on the other side of the Adige River, this neighbourhood is full of charm and character. Several departments of Verona University are nearby, so the neighborhood has a lot of students. There are also residents of different ethnicities, which gives the area a cool, multicultural vibe.

Veronetta is connected to the historic centre via several bridges, including the Ponte Pietra, a beautiful Roman arched bridge and one of the most famous images of Verona. From the bridge, a scenic stairway takes you uphill to Castel San Pietro, a military fortress built by the Austrians when the city was part of the Austro-Hapsburg Empire between 1815-1866. The panoramic views of Verona from up there are amazing.

Another aspect that makes this area an excellent choice for where to stay in Verona is the number of green spaces you can find. Don’t miss the Giusti Garden, a masterpiece of Renaissance garden landscaping that enchanted many illustrious guests such as Goethe, Mozart and Ruskin over the centuries. The paths wind through colourful flower beds, manicured lawns, fountains, and statues. You’ll also find one of Europe’s oldest labyrinths.

Veronetta is home to many hip bars and restaurants catering to a younger crowd. It also has a packed calendar of concerts and cultural events. One of the most famous is the Verona Summer Theatre Season taking place in the ancient Roman Theatre overlooking the river.

• Luxury: Il Vicolo – Occupying a charming 17th-century building, this Aparthotel provides a range of beautiful flats sleeping 2 to 4 guests. They all have WiFi, satellite TV, WiFi, air conditioning, and a fully equipped kitchen. Guests can use the communal laundry room on the ground floor for free once a week.
• Mid-range: Veronetta House – This cozy B&B less than a 10 minute walk from Juliet’s House offers 3 en-suite rooms beautifully decorated with oak-beamed ceilings and bright colours. Two have a balcony and one opens onto a private terrace. A delicious breakfast is served every morning directly in the room.
• Budget: The Hostello – Located on the main bus line linking to many destinations, this hostel is a great option for a budget-friendly stay in Verona. You can choose from a selection of 4 to 6-bed dorm rooms, either mixed or female only. The outdoor garden is perfect for sharing travel tips and stories over a drink.
• Family-friendly: Giardino Giusti House & Court – This delightful B&B only steps from the stunning Giusti Garden offers a selection of triple and quadruple rooms to accommodate the entire family. They are equipped with WiFi, a minibar, and tea and coffee-making facilities. The room rate includes breakfast ad car parking.
• Apartment: Veronetta Lovely apartment – This cozy apartment sleeps four guests comfortably and is just 10 minutes from Juliet’s House. It’s in a great neighbourhood with everything you need during your stay. You’ll also find a garden, among the usual amenities

SAN ZENO

THE BEST AREA TO STAY IN VERONA FOR:
the real thing

If you are looking for where to stay in Verona that keeps you central but without the crowds, then San Zeno is perfect for you. Located west of the historic centre, this charming neighbourhood offers a village vibe while being close to everything. It’s a great place if you’re after an authentic local experience in Verona, so you can get to know the city on a deeper level.

Piazza San Zeno is the heart and soul of the neighbourhood, lovingly guarded by the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore. It’s one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in northern Italy and, according to some, the place where Juliet married Romeo in Shakespeare’s play. It features a stunning altarpiece by Andrea Mantegna and magnificent bronze doors with incredibly detailed bas-reliefs depicting various religious scenes.

The piazza seems straight out of a village, with kids playing, and people strolling around and chatting at café tables. All around are beautiful Renaissance buildings, typical neighbourhood shops and some great restaurants where you can taste authentic Veronese cuisine.

Finally, San Zeno may be quieter, but it’s far from boring. The neighbourhood hosts many exciting events throughout the year, including the parades of one of Italy’s oldest Carnivals. It also holds a popular antique market, Verona Antiquaria, on the first Sunday of the month.

Where to stay in San Zeno

• Luxury: Il Relais dell’Abbazia – Formerly a barn within the Benedictine complex near the San Zeno Abbey, this elegant hotel provides rustic-chic accommodation with parquet floors and wood-beamed ceilings about a 15 minute walk from the historic centre. The enchanting garden is a welcome respite from the city.
• Mid-range: Cinque Rooms – Set in a little square by the river, Cinque has 5 bright and modern rooms, with breakfast included, where thoughtful details abound, from Nespresso machines to Bose Bluetooth speakers. Windows frame beautiful street views without allowing people to see inside the room.
• Budget: Da Virginia – This intimate B&B is located in a little apartment in a quiet residential area close to restaurants and sights. Two simply decorated rooms – one single and one double – with shared bathroom, air conditioning, and WiFi ensure a comfortable stay in Verona without breaking the bank.
• Family-friendly: Residence Antico San Zeno – Beautifully located inside an ancient building dating from the Middle Ages, this splendid hotel sits in the heart of the neighbourhood and offers a selection of triple and quadruple rooms complete with WiFi and DVD players.
• Apartment: Artist’s House – Near the Basilica of San Zeno, this stylish one-bedroom apartment sleeps up to three people comfortably. As the name suggests, its interiors play with colours and shapes to create a cozy, elegant atmosphere. The rate includes a convenient parking space.

BORGO TRENTO

THE BEST AREA TO STAY IN VERONA FOR:
visiting the city with kids

With some great kid-friendly attractions and a quiet atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, Borgo Trento is one of the best neighbourhoods in Verona for families. It’s located on the other side of the Adige River, north of the historic centre.

This green residential area is full of elegant streets punctuated with beautiful Art Nouveau palaces designed by the most famous architects of the time. You’ll find them mostly around Viale Bixo. In terms of accommodations, there are plenty of serviced apartments, which are ideal for families travelling with kids as they give much more flexibility. Plus, there are tons of great stores and restaurants, whether you want to dine out or prefer to rustle up your own meals.

A big military arsenal built by the Austrians in the mid-1800s is now a park and a stage for festivals and events. If you’re looking for some unusual things to do in Verona, you can take a hike up the San Leonardo hill and visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, where you are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Verona, especially at sunset.

For young travellers, you’ve got the Campo Giochi, a large playground with plenty to keep them entertained, including swings, a carousel and a paddling pool. Take a blanket with you so you can have a picnic or grab a snack from the snack bar on site.

Where to stay in Borgo Trento

• Luxury: Ai Ponti Verona – A beautiful guesthouse on the bank of the Adige River, only steps from one of the bridges leading into the historic centre. It offers bright and spacious apartments that can accommodate 2 to 4 guests and are perfect for those who visit Verona with children. The area has plenty of facilities, including a supermarket just around the corner from the property.
• Mid-range: Castello San Felice – This hotel is ideal for visitors wondering where to stay in Verona with parking facilities, as it offers free private parking. It offers family rooms sleeping up to 4 people, with the possibility of adding a cot at no additional cost. They come with a private kitchen and complimentary breakfast.
• Budget: Fleur Blanche – This B&B is a comfortable and convenient option for your stay in Verona, with three classic-style rooms and a good breakfast served on the premises. All rooms have a private bathroom, air conditioning and a balcony.
• Family-friendly: Delle Rose Rooms – This is another great B&B in Borgo Trento, providing a spacious quadruple room perfect for families and equipped with air conditioning, a desk and a flat-screen TV. The historic centre is a 15-minute walk from the property.
• Apartment: Casa Giulietta – Only 10 minutes walk from the central Piazza delle Erbe, Casa Giulietta is a beautiful 2-bedroom apartment complete with a balcony and terrace. It can accommodate up to 6 guests. The owners, who live in the same building, also offer a bicycle rental service.

PORTA NUOVA

THE BEST AREA TO STAY IN VERONA FOR:
late nights out

The Porta Nuova neighbourhood develops around the central train station, south of the historic centre. The area is within easy strolling distance from the city’s main attractions and is home to a variety of bars and clubs that make it an ideal base for those who want to combine sightseeing with a bit of nightlife fun. It’s also a great option if you’re planning to take some day trips from Verona (Venice is about an hour away, just saying…)

One of Porta Nuova’s most popular attractions is a marble sarcophagus in the crypt of the former convent of San Francesco al Corso believed to be the original coffin of the Shakespearian heroine Juliet. Despite little evidence attesting to its authenticity, this has become a true pilgrimage site for die-hard fans.

Also in the convent complex is the Museum of Frescoes, which displays beautiful fresco cycles that once decorated churches and palaces. The most ancient ones date back to the 10th century.

Where to stay in Porta Nuova

• Luxury: Hotel Indigo Verona – Indigo is one of the best hotels in Verona; it’s not just elegant and luxurious but also conveniently located halfway between the historic centre and the train station. Set inside a beautiful Liberty-style building dating from the 1920s, it offers beautifully decorated rooms, a secluded garden with solarium, and a bar with specialised mixologists and a bistro kitchen.
• Mid-range: Hotel Marco Polo – A delightful 3-star hotel with a wellness corner in central Verona, only 5 minutes’ walk from the Arena. Rooms have beamed ceilings and wood floors, while breakfast includes lactose-free and gluten-free products. Transfer services and private parking are available for an extra charge.
• Budget: B&B Cittadella – This B&B is among the best budget hotels in Verona, offering cozy rooms with an excellent location near the Arena. All have parquet floor, WiFi, TV and air conditioning, but only one comes with a private bathroom. For those travelling by car, there’s a garage right in front of the property.
• Family-friendly: ARK Hotel – In the heart of the Porta Nuova district, this 4-star hotel offers a number of comfortable Junior Suites that are great for families. They come with flat-screen TVs, desks, free toiletries and a rich buffet breakfast in the morning.
• Apartment: Dolce Notte Apartments – Located on the first floor of a building with a lift, this property offers 2 recently renovated apartments only 10 minutes from the Arena. They’re stylishly furnished and are equipped with every comfort, from air conditioning to dishwashers. 

VERONA FIERE

THE BEST AREA TO STAY IN VERONA FOR:
business trips

If you travel to Verona to attend a trade fair like Vinitaly, Fieracavalli, or the Verona International Tattoo Expo, finding a hotel near the Verona Fiere convention centre is the best solution to quickly reach the venue without wasting time in commuting.

Located south of the city centre, this is a modern-looking neighbourhood with lots of newly constructed buildings and facilities able to accommodate the large crowds that attend Verona’s prestigious international events. There’s a wide range of hotels to choose from, which can be unsurprisingly expensive during the events.

If you want to add a bit of sightseeing to your business trip, you can always catch a bus to the city centre. The convention centre is well served by urban lines 21, 22, 61, 51, and 52.

Where to stay in Verona Fiere

• Luxury: Best Western CTC Hotel Verona – This is a great business hotel near Verona Fiere. It’s just off the city’s bypass and provides spacious rooms with classic blue and green decor and large windows. Facilities include a 24h gym, ample parking space, a restaurant and a free shuttle service to both the exhibition venue and the city centre.
• Mid-range: Hotel Fiera – Only 300 metres from Verona Fiere and with a convenient bus stop right outside the property that goes into the city centre, this elegant hotel offers excellent value for money. You can expect spacious rooms, a wellness and fitness centre, a restaurant, breakfast with organic and coeliac products, and free parking.
• Budget: Santa Teresa House – A tranquil budget hotel offering clean, simple rooms only 10 minutes walk from the exhibition centre. They all have a private bathroom, TV and WiFi, and can accommodate 2 to 4 guests. An Italian-style breakfast is included in the room rate.
• Family-friendly: Fiera Camera – Just a short stroll from Verona Fiere, this guesthouse offers a selection of triple and quadruple rooms that are simple in style yet very comfortable and equipped with everything a family could need, like air conditioning, WiFi, TVs, and private parking.
• Apartment: Corte Roveggia – Monolocale Picasso – Sleeping up to 3 guests, this beautiful studio sits inside a fully renovated property only 50 meters from the Verona Fiere convention centre. You’ll find cozy interiors with wood beam ceilings, a garden, and free parking on the premises.
