Why visit Modica in Sicily
There are two main reasons to visit Modica: one cultural, and one culinary.
On the cultural side, Modica is part of the UNESCO-listed Val di Noto together with seven other towns, including Noto, Ragusa, and Caltagirone. This area is famous for its extraordinary Baroque architecture, considered among the finest in Europe. The style emerged after the devastating earthquake of 1693, when the towns were rebuilt by visionary architects and master craftsmen.
In Modica, traces of this Baroque rebirth are everywhere, starting from the Cathedral of San Giorgio and that of San Pietro (yes, Modica has two!). Add to that the remains of the ancient castle, former cave dwellings, and countless scenic viewpoints scattered across town, and it’s easy to see why exploring this town is such a delight.
And then there’s the culinary reason: chocolate. Modica is Sicily’s chocolate capital, and what makes it unique is the way it’s made. The technique, introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century and originally from the Aztecs, uses a cold-processing method that leaves the chocolate with a grainy, rustic texture and a rich, aromatic flavor. Today, Modica’s chocolate is protected with IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) status, and a must-see in town is Antica Dolceria Bonajuto, the oldest chocolate shop in Sicily, which has been producing artisanal chocolate every day since 1880.
Where to stay in Modica
Modica is made up of two main neighbourhoods: Modica Alta, perched high on the hilltops, and Modica Bassa, which stretches across the valley below. This division has both historical and geographical roots. The original settlement developed around the castle at the top of the hill, while the surrounding landscape of rivers and rolling hills naturally encouraged expansion into the lower areas when the town started to grow. The result is a city built on different levels, with streets winding up and down between the two neighbourhoods—a layout that has earned Modica the nickname “split pomegranate”, since it appears divided yet connected, much like the two halves of a pomegranate.
When it comes to choosing where to stay, the area around the Cathedral of San Giorgio is usually the best bet. It’s positioned between Modica Alta and Modica Bassa, so it puts you within easy walking distance of both neighborhoods.
