Staying in a hotel near the Vatican is an excellent choice if you plan on spending most of your time at the Vatican Museums or joining pilgrims at a Papal audience. In which case, I recommend this 5-star rated early bird access tour Staying near the Vatican is also a great option if you prefer to stay in a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle of Rome’s historic centre.
Covering just 44 hectares, the Vatican is the smallest independent city-state in the whole world. When you’re in Rome, you absolutely can’t miss this special place ruled by the Pope and packed with so much historical, artistic, and religious value.
While the Euro remains the official currency, the Vatican has its own post office, banking system and telephone network. Moreover, it’s the only country to have made it onto the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
Where exactly is the Vatican?
The Vatican is located near the right bank of the Tiber river, not far from the lively Trastevere district. The area has easy access to Rome’s key sites and major transportation hubs. The metro line A has two stations – Cipro and Ottaviano – and there are many convenient buses. Bus #40, for instance, takes passengers to Piazza Venezia and Termini Station, while bus #81 near the Vatican Museums travels to the historic centre and the Colosseum. Lastly, SIT provides an airport bus service from Fiumicino to Termini Station stopping at the Vatican (via Crescenzio).
The Vatican also has its own railway station right behind St Peter’s Basilica. On Saturdays between April and October, you can ride the “Pope’s train” to visit the Pontifical Villas at Castel Gandolfo.
Things to see near the Vatican
There is so much to take in for such a small state. In fact, several Vatican attractions are among Rome’s most popular and house some of Italy’s most valuable art.
Top of the list are the Vatican Museums, whose amazing collections are a real treat for art enthusiasts. The visit is a journey through more than 20 centuries of history and art, with masterpieces like the geographical maps, Raphael’s pictorial cycles for Pope Julius II’s apartments, and Michelangelo’s gorgeous frescoed ceiling inside the Sistine Chapel. The best time to see the Sistine Chapel is before the crowds arrive.
More treasures can be found inside St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the largest religious buildings in the world, which was designed by illustrious artists like Bramante and Michelangelo. You can see Bernini’s giant baldachin and Michelangelo’s famous Pietà, which he sculpted when he was just 24 years old. As part of the visit, you’ll also get to see the papal tombs right below the basilica.
Those who are not afraid of heights can climb to the top of the dome for a bird’s-eye view of the Vatican and Bernini’s beautiful double colonnade encircling St. Peter’s Square.
